Talk English learners took part in Walk and Talk English activities in parks across Manchester this summer. They played garden games in Crowcroft Park in Longsight and went on a leaf and plant trail in Platt Fields Park in Fallowfield. Learners learnt the language for estimating and measuring in Crumpsall Park in the north of Manchester and used lots of describing words to talk about the sculptures in Whitworth Park.  Some also had fun in the children’s play areas and learnt the names for different playground equipment that they did not know before.

We asked a few learners to write or tell us about the activities that they have attended.

‘I enjoyed the activity very much. I can see something very interesting in it, for example a cherry tree, lavender, squirrels, ducks and flowers. In my country we do not have a lake within a park because Hong Kong is a small city so there is not enough space. Sometimes some ducks followed me on the path. It was so funny. Every week I look forward to this activity so much because I can experience new things at the park each time. My teacher is very nice and patient because my English is so poor. I have a lot of things I don’t understand. She used many methods to explain for me.’ (by Andie)

‘The activity I enjoy most is walking in the park with my instructor. I can learn a lot of new things during the activity. My instructor is very helpful and patient. Whenever I saw something new and I did not know what it was, I asked her and then she explained clearly until I actually understood it. Sometimes I used wrong and confused language to ask a question. But she has a she can catch my mind and give me a correct answer. I hope this activity can go on for a long time. It is not just good for me but for other newcomers also.’ (by Sum)

Walk and Talk English activities will continue to run monthly in Manchester from October 2015.
