Today learners and volunteers at Cravenwood Primary Academy  School in Crumpsall, Manchester welcomed Baroness Susan Williams of Trafford to their weekly Talk English class, chatting about everything from favourite colours to the House of Lords!

After introducing themselves to their visitor, the learners asked Baroness Williams a wide range of questions, not only finding out the Baroness’ favourite colour (green), favourite food (Lebanese) and favourite TV programme (Call the Midwife), but also about her role as a Minister in the Department for Communities and Local Government and House of Lords.

Over a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit, the learners also talked to the Baroness about living in the UK and their hopes for the future.   Learners told the Baroness that they appreciated the education system, women’s rights, living in a respectful society, and curiously on a wet, rainy Manchester day, the weather!  The learners also talked about their hopes of finding work in the future to build a better life for themselves and their families.

It was a great chance for our learners to practise their developing English language skills and learn more about government and politics first hand from a Minister, as well as show Baroness Williams the impact of the great work being carried out by volunteers and staff working on the Talk English project across the North West and West Yorkshire, which has helped almost 10,000 people improve their English and get more involved in their community.

With special thanks to staff at Cravenwood Primary Academy and our wonderful volunteers, Faiza and Kevin!
