The staff and volunteers from the Talk English project in Rochdale were delighted to win a Diversity in Education Award at Rochdale’s annual diversity celebration event, which was held at Rochdale Town Hall.

The Awards are organised by KYP a leading community organisation, which has been established for 35 years. KYP  are ‘an independent charity dedicated to the development and economic regeneration of the communities of Rochdale’.

The Rochdale Diversity Awards  are held annually and  promote the excellent work of individuals, organisations and employers to support and promote equality, diversity and cohesion within the borough of Rochdale.

Safina Arif, Ruhena Begum and Steph Rush from Rochdale Borough Council won the Diversity in Education Award for their work on  the Talk English project in Rochdale.  The award aims to highlight the important role schools, colleges and education providers play in cohesion, as well as highlighting best practice in promoting, sharing and/or teaching about cohesive communities.

Since starting the project last year, the project has supported almost 500 people in Rochdale to improve their English and integrate into the community through volunteer taught courses, drop-ins, 1:1 mentoring with volunteer Talk English Friends and activities.  The team have also trained 75 staff from local businesses and services in language awareness and communication skills through Talk English Here.

So well done to Safina, Ruhena and Steph- and not forgetting their team of fantastic volunteers- for this great achievement!  The award recognises the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication of all involved to improve community cohesion and integration.
