Last week, we visited a Talk English session in Halifax, a town in Calderdale, West Yorkshire.  Set up by the Workers’ Educational Association Yorkshire and Humber, St Augustines Centre offer an extremely popular Talk English Course and Cafe every Tuesday which is led by 4 volunteers who have been recruited and trained by Hazel and Tracy from WEA Yorkshire and Humber.

On the day we visited, some learners were learning English words and phrases around health and describing their symptoms at the doctors, whilst others worked on other activities to improve their literacy skills in English.  The volunteers had successfully created a friendly, supportive learning environment and there was a real buzz in the rooms.

As well as Halifax, WEA Yorkshire and Humber are also offering Talk English Courses in nearby Wakefield.  For more information contact Adam Roe aroe@wea.org.uk .
