Manchester Talk English learners went on a trip to Manchester Museum on 22nd June. We looked in the vivarium and spotted the frogs, chameleons and snakes and then Matt from the museum brought out a chameleon that the learners enjoyed touching and holding. Our volunteers were fantastic too, Sarah Wilkinson has written a reader about Maharajah the elephant that lots of learners have been enjoying in their reading groups. Here are some quotes from volunteers and staff:
“Our learners got so much out of our trip to Manchester Museum. It was great for them to experience learning English in a different setting, and to talk about things that were beyond their every day experiences. We did follow up lessons based on the trip, culminating in the group writing a book about their visit. I was amazed at how much they could remember, including the story of Maharajah the elephant, and they were all very proud of the book they helped to produce.” (Sarah Wilkinson, volunteer)
“My learners enjoy museum visits. It provides a different environment to learn English. They share their experience of the objects displayed, e.g. they comment on the current use of some objects displayed. One learner told me how dangerous tigers were in his country. It also introduces them to a place to bring their children in the school holidays.
They are relaxed in the museum and they are inspired to try new vocabulary.” (Moira Haworth, volunteer)
“The staff at the museum make it really special for the learners by engaging with them, telling them interesting facts and stories about the exhibits and asking them about their countries. When they leave the learners are always beaming and say they will be back with their families.” (Kate Lloyd, Talk English Manchester Coordinator)
