Earlier this month, we visited Talk English Courses in Manningham, Bradford, where learners from different countries attend classes at Manningham Library and the Meridian Centre,  learning centre which provides vital skills, training, and qualifications to help local people progress in everyday life and work.

Evneet and Trina are volunteering at Manningham Library, supporting a group of women to improve their English skills.  After realising their learners needed more help around expressing where they live and come from, Evneet and Trina developed a great activity around a map and different countries, which all learners engaged in enthusiastically.

Down the road at the Meridian Centre, Rehana and Nejmah are supporting two more groups of women to develop their English skills.

During a lesson about shopping, Rehana successfully used a short reader about a shopping trip to get learners speaking in English about their shopping habits and needs, whilst in the next room, Nejmah’s group practised asking for things at the shop.

In all the lessons, learners were very enthusiastic as they practised speaking English and learning new words and phrases that will help them in their everyday lives.

‘We want to talk to the children’s teachers, we want to shopping and we make appointments- it’s very important in life.’

The learners also praised their teachers and said that they had made friends through coming to the class.

‘Very good teacher.  I like no coming to home- I sit here!’
