Last Thursday, the Talk English project won an ELTon for Local Innvovation from the British Council, the only international awards to recognise innovative achievement in English Language Teaching globally.

Since starting last year, the Talk English project has supported over 5500 learners to improve their English with the help of 1000 volunteers in parts of Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Nuala Trace and Michaela Salmon recieved the award on behalf of staff, community partners and volunteers involved in the project in each area at a ceremony held in London and hosted by writer and presenter Angela Rippon OBE.

The scheme’s success has been praised by Councillor Sue Murphy, Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council and lead member for Employment and Skills. She said:

“#TalkEnglish is about making the everyday understandable to non native speakers of English. Learners benefit as they grow in confidence and find it easier to make friends and find work and generally to get on with their lives.”

We are delighted to receive an award for theTalk English project, as it recognises all the hard work and enthusiasm of our project staff, community partners and volunteers in all areas in supporting people to improve their English and get more involved in the community.
